The repair
shop, enemy or friend?
Not too long ago, Sears was charged with questionable
practices relating to automobile repair, raising questions
regarding the widespread incidents of auto repair fraud in the
United States. This particular case caused actions by 43
states. Shortly after that hearing, the National Association of
Attorney's General formed a task force to investigate the issue
and to coordinate efforts of enforcements. They also received
$200,000 to fund an automotive industry repair reform.
For most people, their car is the key to survival, with
regard to using it to get to work, so when something goes wrong
it needs to be taken care of quickly and correctly. That is one
reason why auto repair fraud has the potential of being a huge
problem. Recently, there was a case brought against Sears
concerning automobile repair fraud that prompted the NAAG
(National Association of Attorneys General) to assign an
automotive repair task force. In the Sears case alone, there
were 43 different states involved and $200,000 was assigned to
use for the repair industry reform.
Unfortunately, there are companies and businesses that will
take advantage of unsuspecting people often, and at very
vulnerable times. For instance, recently there was a case
brought against Sears relating to auto repair fraud that
included actions in 43 states. This prompted the National
Association of Attorneys General (NAAG) to form a task force to
investigate and coordinate enforcement efforts. There was a
$200,000 fund made available as well to assist in the repair
industry reform.
The pervasiveness of automobile fraud in the United States
was made even more evident not too long ago when there were
charges brought against Sears, which ended up involving 43
different states, for auto repair fraud. Unfortunately, most
people rely on their vehicles for much of their daily routines,
such as for work, grocery shopping and entertainment.
Sometimes, there are some unscrupulous people or companies that
will try to take advantage of that fact. A task force was
formed by the National Association of Attorneys General to help
with enforcement efforts and they were given a $200,000 fund to
assist in the repair industry reform.
Given the sophisticated equipment in most automobiles today
some question it is no surprise that many feel they are at the
mercy of the repair shops and their high prices. Even if
something like an engine repair or major truck repair work is
absolutely necessary, it still may leave a little doubt in the
mind of the consumer about whether it was done properly, or if
they were overcharged. Sometimes they will replace your car
parts with used car parts without your knowledge, so be sure to
check everything over carefully.
Obviously, a trip to the repair shop is not at the top of
your favorite things to do list; however, there are some things
that you may be able to do to make it less stressful. Before
deciding where to take your vehicle for auto repair, be sure to
check them out thoroughly. Check with the Better Business
Bureau or any other available resources. Word of mouth is also
a pretty accurate evaluator, so ask everyone you know if they
have had any dealings with that specific car parts shop.
Finding a reliable auto repair shop can sometimes be a
daunting task so be sure to check them out carefully using any
and all resources, such as the Better Business Bureau, to see
if there have been any complaints filed against the company.
Also, ask your friends and relatives if they have dealt with
that particular car parts shop, as word of mouth is usually an
accurate evaluation of the company.
Understandably, most consumers would rather do just about
anything than take their car to the repair shop. It can be a
time consuming and frustrating experience trying to find a
reputable auto repair shop. Do a little homework before
deciding where to take your car by checking with the Better
Business Bureau, and ask your friends and family if they have
worked with that particular car parts shop and what they
thought about the service they received.
When you are speaking with a mechanic be sure that you
understand everything you are being told. If you are unsure
about anything, then ask again and get an estimate in writing,
especially if it concerns engine repair. As well, make it clear
to them that no other work is to be performed unless you
authorize it first. Tell them to call you to discuss any
additional work and then give authorization for the mechanic to
go ahead, if desired.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates
that consumers lose billions of dollars every year due to
unnecessary or substandard repairs; lease a new car if you feel it is a
better option. Before the work is started, consider telling
the auto repair shop that you want your used car parts back
once they have completed the work. While this is no
guarantee that you won't be taken advantage of it may at
least let them know that you are not completely naive.
While most repair shops are legitimate, there are some
dishonest mechanics around, as indicated by the National
Highway Safety Administration's estimate that consumers lose
billions of dollars a year on substandard and/or unnecessary
auto repair. One thing that you can do is to tell the mechanic
that you want your used car parts back. It may not keep them
from taking advantage but it will at least show them you do
have some knowledge about car repairs.
You may have some trepidation about taking your car to a
mechanic for repairs and your concerns may be well founded, as
indicated by the National Highway Safety Administration's
estimate about consumers losing billions of dollars due to
fraudulent auto repair work. Unfortunately, there are some
repair shops that will try to take advantage of car owners, by
making unnecessary repairs or charging inflated repair costs.
Consider telling the mechanic that after the repairs are
completed you would like to have your used car parts back.
Although that is no guarantee against deception, it will at
least give them reason to reconsider doing any fraudulent
work.
have your mechanics advise you on how to make your car more
environmentally friendy. green cars are advisable.
